Following the recent Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022 test, it's heartening to note that Singaporean students have excelled globally in mathematics, science, and reading. This remarkable achievement deserves praise. However, when we delve into the survey results, we uncover fascinating insights into the relationships students share with their teachers and families.
The data, disclosed on December 5, underscores the strong appreciation students have for the support received from their teachers. A notable 86% reported that their teachers offer extra help in most or all mathematics lessons, surpassing the OECD average of 70%. Additionally, 87% expressed satisfaction with teachers showing interest in their well-being, exceeding the OECD average of 75%.
Yet, a contrasting sentiment arises when considering family support. Only half of the students felt that their parents took a weekly interest in their learning, falling below the OECD average of 66%. Moreover, just 47% reported weekly parental inquiries about any school-related problems, compared to the OECD average of 57%.
Despite these findings, almost nine out of ten students shared a weekly main meal with their parents, highlighting a robust familial bond. The PISA 2022 survey emphasized the critical role of family support in students' overall well-being and academic success. Across all countries and economies, students with more family support reported a greater sense of belonging, increased life satisfaction, and enhanced confidence in independent learning. The report underscores the impact of seemingly routine activities, such as sharing a family meal or engaging in conversations, on student performance and well-being. Students in OECD countries who regularly participated in these activities scored 16 to 28 points higher in mathematics, even after considering socio-economic profiles.
In response to these findings, the Ministry of Education (MOE) emphasizes the crucial role of parents as key partners in education. The MOE is committed to working closely with parents, providing resources to enhance their support for their children's education.
