Singaporean students have once again secured the top positions in mathematics, science, and reading in the recently released Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022. This international benchmarking study, conducted every three years by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), showcases the exceptional abilities of fifteen-year-olds in Singapore.
In a cohort of 6,606 students from 149 secondary schools and 15 private institutions, including international schools and madrasahs, Singapore emerged as the undisputed leader in educational excellence. Compared to the 2018 results, Singaporean students maintained their stellar performance in mathematics, witnessed substantial improvements in science, but experienced a slight dip in reading scores. This decline, however, is not unique to Singapore but reflects a global shift in reading habits.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) highlighted that Singapore continued to boast high proportions of students achieving excellence. Impressively, 41% and 24% of students demonstrated proficiency at the highest levels in mathematics and science, respectively. In reading, 23% were identified as top performers, showcasing their ability to apply knowledge in real-world contexts.
The MOE also emphasized the resilience of Singapore's education system, citing the PISA 2022 results in conjunction with the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS). In the PIRLS study released earlier, Singaporean Primary 4 pupils emerged as the top readers globally.
Education Minister Chan Chun Sing took to Instagram to express heartfelt appreciation for the commendable efforts of students in navigating their learning journey amidst the disruptions caused by the pandemic. He extended gratitude to educators who displayed remarkable adaptability, swiftly transitioning to online platforms and innovating teaching methods to ensure a seamless continuation of learning.
